Programs & Subsidies

Participating in an educational trip to Israel in Year 10 is a key factor in connecting Australian Jewish teens to their culture, heritage and community. Y2i was established to enable as many students as possible to go on an approved program by reducing the financial strain on families through a discretionary subsidy of up to $5,000.

You apply through your school or BJE to participate on a program. Once accepted onto the program you will be sent a link to apply for the Y2i discretionary subsidy and Y2i will advise you of the outcome.

Eligible Programs

Y2i has approved the following 5 schools and organisations to facilitate Year 10 Israel programs for students at Jewish and non-Jewish high schools.

BJE (NSW Board of Jewish Education)

BJE has facilitated High School Israel programs since 2008. Nesiah (meaning journey) is a unique Year 10 Israel program that brings together non-Jewish day school students from NSW, ACT and QLD in a shared Israel experience for all levels of religiosity and knowledge.

Every child will find their place, because Israel has a way of bringing together a cross section of the community and making them feel at home and allowing them grow as individuals.

Subsidies

Y2i discretionary subsidies are available to any Year 10 student in NSW, ACT and QLD, with at least one Jewish parent, regardless of having been to Israel previously.

As part of your application process to participate in a school or BJE’s Israel program, you will be sent a link to apply for a Y2i discretionary subsidy up to $5,000. Each application is reviewed and assessed and if granted by Y2i in its discretion (and subject to the availability of funds), is paid to the organisation providing your trip.

Y2i will also advise you of the outcome of your application. The approved subsidy amount will be automatically deducted from the overall program cost.

So that we can ensure that our limited Y2i funds help as many families as possible, the Y2i subsidy application process includes answering some questions so that we can better assess applications and determine, at our discretion, whether to grant some or all of the requested subsidy.

Y2i wants children from all families to participate in these life changing journeys. We recognise that families are experiencing different pressures, both financial and otherwise, and our communal demographics are changing. We therefore need to use our donor funds wisely, and ensure we exercise our discretion and allocate funds in a way that enables us to maximise the number of students participating in Year 10 Israel programs.

Together we can ensure that Y2i still makes these life changing opportunities possible and sustainable, as we move forward.

FAQs about subsidies

Do you have questions about subsidies…

Y2i discretionary subsidies are available to any Year 10 student in NSW, ACT and QLD, with at least one Jewish parent, regardless of having been to Israel previously.

Subsidies are provided at Y2i’s discretion and subject to the availability of funds.

All families are invited to apply for a discretionary subsidy of up to $5,000 as part of their program’s application process. Each application is reviewed and assessed and if granted by Y2i in its discretion (and subject to the availability of funds), is paid to the organisation providing your trip.

It is at Y2i’s discretion to decide whether all, none, or only part of the subsidy amount applied for, is granted.

As part of your application process to participate in a school or BJE’s Israel program, you will be sent a link to apply for a Y2i discretionary subsidy up to $5,000. If you have already applied for a program and have not received details on the subsidy application please contact your school or BJE.

Those who can afford the full cost of the programs are encouraged to not apply for all or part of a subsidy.  This will allow Y2i to allocate donor funds to support the maximum number of students participating, and to families who need further financial assistance. By not applying for all, or even part of a subsidy, you are directly assisting families who are less fortunate and need added support.

There are available options for further means-testing financial assistance should it be needed. The Jewish Day Schools have their own mechanisms for providing additional means-tested funding if required. For those students who attend non-Jewish day schools, Y2i has established the Y2i Assistance Fund. Families who cannot afford some, or all, of the remaining costs of the programs can apply for further means-tested support.

The discretionary subsidy, if granted, is a gift from the community. There is no obligation to pay it back.

The subsidy is worth up to $5,000 and is paid directly to the organisation that is providing your trip. Once you are accepted onto a program, any approved subsidy amount will be offset against the total cost of your program.
